Words of Power: National Saturday Club at York Art Gallery

As lead artist for the National Saturday Club at York Art Gallery I developed and ran a range of print and collage activities for young participants, such as collage, lino printing and block printing. The gallery also asked us to produce a work Inspired by Harland Miller's Letter Paintings. I ran introductory workshops on letterforms and the group visited People Powered Press and Thin Ice Press to learn more about printed typography. Together the group produced Words of Power: A Collaborative Sculpture. Reflecting on themes of place, identity and resilience, the sculpture consists of colourful blocks with intersecting and over lapping letterforms that can be arranged and re-arraged to form words selected by the participants.
A final exhibition of all the work produced was presented, with Words of Power: A Collaborative Sculpture remaining in the gallery space throughout the Harland Miller exhibition.
Inspired by Harland Miller’s paintings, which explore the visual and emotional impact of words, this piece plays with text and form. The blocks, like Miller’s book covers, invite us to consider how words shape meaning, memory, and personal connection.
